Time Travel in Havana

TRIP MADE IN JUNE 2018 / PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 12, 2018

Today marks the last day of my adventure in Costa Rica, but also the beginning of a new one... I pack my bag, leave Puerto Viejo and fly to the largest island in the Caribbean: Cuba. I have no idea what awaits me there, whether it's in terms of landscapes or culture, but one thing is for sure is that I'm very excited to discover it!

I had heard a lot about Cubans; that they loved to dance, even in the streets, and that they were very friendly and welcoming. Indeed, the joy of living is felt despite the rather difficult living conditions of the inhabitants. Traveling to Cuba means getting out of your comfort zone; what is considered banal for us is a luxury for them. We then question everything and relearn to appreciate small everyday things.

The old quarter of Havana: Habana Vieja

Habana Vieja ou le Vieux Havane en français est le plus ancien quartier de la ville, il contient les bases de la ville originale. Il a été nommé au patrimoine mondiale de l'UNESCO pour son mélange original des styles baroque et néoclassique.

As you may have noticed, I can't help but take pictures of everything I see. The city of Havana was perfect for that; the streets had a unique atmosphere, the old cars were very well maintained and we witnessed small moments of traditional life while walking between the houses.

In the heart of the city: the Central Park

The Central Park of Havana is the main square in the center of the city. It separates Old Havana from the Center. The park is surrounded by important buildings such as the Great Theatre of Havana Alicia Alonso, the National Museum of the Fine Arts and many luxury hotels.

A statue of Jose Marti, the poet, writer, lawyer and fighter for Cuban independence, stands in the middle of the square, surrounded by 28 palm trees in reference to his date of birth.

The National Capitol of Havana is located right next to the Central Park. Built after the First World War, it is the most important construction in the Cuban capital.

During my stay it was under restoration as you can see in the photo, and is due to be reopened as the home of the National Assembly of Cuba. Before that it housed the Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology from 1959 to 2013.

My 3 favorite restaurants in Havana

Its rooftop terrace offers a splendid view at sunset and a very romantic atmosphere. It is located in the urban district of Vedado, on the west side of the city.

  • The restaurant under the Great Theater (photo 2)

Can't find the name of this one, but this great restaurant is located just below the Grand Theatre of Havana, on the central park.

  • Cinco Esquinas Trattoria (Italian cuisine)

The perfect place, in the heart of Havana, to enjoy good fresh pasta and delicious pizzas fresh from the wood fire.

The city center: Centro Habana

The center of Havana is the municipality located between Old Havana and Vedado. It is a must-see neighborhood to visit in the capital with its many emblematic buildings. After the breakup of the alliance between Cuba and the USSR during the 1990s, the neighborhood was much destroyed and did not receive much aid to restore the damaged buildings.

In this part of the city, the squares are more authentic and traditional scenes of life take place all around us. Tourists and locals mingle, helping each other. Often, Cubans come up to us to ask us where we come from and show us around the neighborhood while telling us the history of the country.

We explored many streets, walking for hours, getting lost between the high walls of the old buildings. We enjoyed the songs of the musicians in the streets and admired their way of life. I really enjoyed seeing the joy that Cubans reflect; children laughing and playing in the middle of the streets, grandfathers sitting at the foot of their door watching the passers-by, a cigar in their mouth and women telling their gossip in their always very colorful clothes.

I spent hours admiring and taking pictures of the rows of old American cars from the 1960s, all meticulously maintained by the owner. Their cars are the treasure of the population, they attract the eyes and the money of tourists, so the goal is to keep them running as long as possible.

My favorite place was the Malecon, this long promenade by the sea that was also the perfect place to admire the sunset. From there, we could see the sun going down to disappear behind the city and reflect on the water. A very cozy atmosphere took place around us, surrounded by fishermen, musicians, tourists and locals who came to have an aperitif on the rocks by the sea.
