Viñales Valley
VOYAGE EFFECTUÉ EN JUIN 2018 / PUBLIÉ LE 12 OCTOBRE 2018
Départ de la Havane en direction de la campagne cubaine : Viñales.

Viñales is a small town in western Cuba, surrounded by strange little mountains called "mogotes". There is no exact translation, but they are limestone rocks.
In the village, almost all the houses have been converted into "casas particulares" to accommodate tourists. As soon as we got off the bus, dozens of locals were coming up to us to try to rent us their rooms. In fact, the beauty of the place means that tourism has become a good opportunity for the villagers to earn some money.
Namely
Wall of Prehistory

We put on our shoes and leave the village on foot towards the Wall of Prehistory. We then discover the mogotes up close, with tobacco and corn fields at their foot. We meet several farmers on the way who try to exchange fruit for pens or sell their cigars and coffee beans.
Here, cigar production is the main activity of the farmers who still work with oxen. The inhabitants still travel by carts pulled by horses or oxen and the few taxis are old cabriolets from the last century, still very well maintained.

The Acuaticos

Early in the afternoon, we started a short hike at the foot of a mogote with the aim of finding a nice sport to spend the night in a tent. We started a short climb that lasted no more than an hour before we came face to face with a cute little wooden house, which offered a panoramic view of the entire Viñales valley. It was the first house in a small village on the heights called "Los Acuaticos".
A whole barnyard surrounded the house. Roosters and hens pecked at seeds, a goat grazed the grass, a pig sniffed at our feet, a cat meowed behind the wooden door, and a skinny dog seemed to be guarding the house. We began to wonder if someone lived here and took care of these animals. Later that afternoon, the owner finally arrived on his horse, having worked in his tobacco fields during the day.
It was a farmer of about fifty years old who lived there, with only his animals for company. He made us taste a few glasses of wine and homemade rum before taking us to a meadow where he must have fed his cows. It was there that we discovered this splendid spot which offered a perfectly clear view of the valley. We then decided to set up our tent on this meadow which seemed perfect to admire the sunrise the next morning.

Birthday under the stars

After leaving the farmer, we set up our tent and began to wait for the sun to go down. Despite being on the wrong side of the mountain to see the sunset, we were still able to enjoy some beautiful purple colors in the sky. As night fell, the full moon began to light up and illuminated the entire meadow for us.
This is where we chose to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday, who was turning 22 this year, which explains the golden balloons on the roof of the tent!
Early in the morning the next day, we wake up to the sounds of animals echoing throughout the valley, bouncing off every cliff. Sticking my head out of the tent, I catch a glimpse of the first colours of the sun, still shy at this hour.
