savoir

South America is the southern part of the American continent, located south of Central America, but it is often considered a continent in its own right.

It is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America.

South America is sometimes included in a larger group called Latin America.

THE AMAZON

The Amazon is a large tropical forest. It is the largest in the world: it crosses 9 countries (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil). The river that crosses it, the Amazon, is the one with the largest flow in the world.

LANGUAGES

The languages of South America come mostly from colonization by Europe.

Spanish is the official language in most South American countries. Brazil is an exception to this rule with Portuguese as the official language. Otherwise in the "Guianas", English, French and Dutch are spoken as the official language for historical reasons.

Some Amerindian languages and dialects still persist on the continent today, such as Quechua for example.

GEOGRAPHY

South America constitutes the southernmost part of the land mass of what is generally referred to as the New World, the Western Hemisphere, or the Americas.

The following countries are therefore included:

  • Argentina (capital: Buenos Aires);

  • Bolivia (capital: La Paz);

  • Brazil (capital: Brasília);

  • Chile (capital: Santiago de Chile);

  • Colombia (capital: Bogotá);

  • Ecuador (capital: Quito);

  • Guyana (capital: Georgetown);

  • French Guiana (capital: Cayenne);

  • Falkland Islands (capital: Brasília);

  • Paraguay (capital: Asunción);

  • Peru (capital: Lima);

  • Suriname (capital: Paramaribo);

  • Uruguay (capital: Montevideo);

  • Venezuela (capital: Caracas).

SECURITY

South America is a fairly poor region and this is felt more in some places than others. The lack of security associated with this continent comes mainly from the lack of balance between the rich and the less rich. The middle class does not really exist.

The main risks when traveling are scams, street robbery and hotel robbery. There are also some cases of assault, especially in big cities. To prevent these risks, the best advice you will be given is to avoid showing your signs of wealth, keep your phones and devices hidden when you walk etc.

SEASON

to visit

Northern South America (Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela) has a tropical climate. The ideal time to go there is therefore the dry season which differs depending on the country. However, avoid the months of November to May, which are the most prone to bad weather, unless you are going to mountainous places such as Salto Angel in Venezuela.

In the center of South America (Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay), each country has a climatic variety based on the difference in altitude. In this area, the dry season begins in June, and temperatures exceed 36°C. So for those who cannot stand this stifling heat, the ideal would be to set foot there during the period when temperatures become pleasant, which goes from April to September.

In the far south of the continent, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay have dry summers and cold winters. If you want to enjoy the beautiful stretches of beaches with turquoise water, embark from October to December, or between March and June.
